Hey there!
Let me tell you a story of how I went from teaching five yoga classes a day to earning 10,000 a month as a yoga teacher. It was a journey filled with hard work and determination, and I want to go through it step-by-step with you so you can see what I did and went through to get to where I am now.
First things first, it was never my goal to earn 10,000 a month as a yoga teacher. Originally, all I wanted was to have enough to pay for my bills and expenses while still having time for my own yoga practice. I knew something had to change because I just do not have the time anymore for my own practice due to the five classes I was having a day.
So, from five a day I reduced my class load to just five classes a week. Also, I started to create weekly workshops that allowed me to work with smaller groups of students, focus on specific topics, and connect more deeply with my students. It also gave me more time to focus on my own practice and personal growth that I was even able to teach evening classes so I could dedicate my whole morning to my yoga practice, pranayama, and meditation, as well as studying yoga philosophy and anatomy in more depth.
But offering workshops is just half the battle. Next was I had to learn how to market myself and offerings the right way and make it attractive to students. So I decided to expand our offerings and started to run yoga and surf retreats. In all of these changes, one thing I realized is that being able to move and pivot fast is key to having a successful yoga career.
Due to the retreats’ success and the good feedback we got from our teaching styles, guests started to ask if we could organize a yoga teacher training. A couple of months later, we organized our first one and having the combination of drop-in classes, workshops, retreats, and YTT helped me reach the 10k months as a yoga teacher, but there are now other ways.
We also started putting yoga courses online as we evolved. That helped us reach a wider audience. But one thing that I can say that stood out to me when I look back at my journey is the lack of resistance. Whenever there is resistance, like when I was teaching five classes a day, I stopped and pivoted. Never did I try and force myself to create things that I didn’t want to offer.
Being able to help yoga teachers has always been my passion, but what I wanted to do mainly was to help them have a regular yoga practice. Because something I noticed quickly is that other yoga teachers, like me before, burn out and do not even practice yoga regularly. But I tried to help yoga teachers with this, and it was not working. So, I asked my community “what do you want?” and they all said: “I want to know how you created your online courses and how you make money with it.”
So, I started to pivot towards that direction and became a business coach for yoga teachers. Now, I will not say to do the same to earn 10k a month as a yoga teacher. What I am trying to emphasize is that there are many ways to get there, and it all starts with finding what you’re passionate about and building from there.
Teaching yoga is a rewarding career, but it can also demand a lot from you – both physically and mentally. What’s important is to find a balance between teaching, practising, and taking care of yourself.
Remember, it’s never about who earns the most or teaches the most.
It’s about finding what you love to do and building a sustainable career from there.
